Six members of BAC attended the Salisbury FITA and it was a great day with a very friendly atmosphere, The sun shone but the wind force was unforgiving. Well done to everyone for lasting the day

Mushroom Shoot at Sway 2010

On the 15th August a group of our archers attended the Mushroom Shoot, the weather began damp and misty but soon the sun shone for the archers and a great shoot was had by all.

Our archers did very well and came home with a collection of medals,
well done to all who attended.

Thank you to Sway Bowmen for a lovely relaxing shoot, and all your hard work.

Osprey Shoot 2010

On the 18th of May a group of archers from B.A.C. packed up their bows and set off for a feat of a shoot, yes, the triple at Osprey was not to be sniffed at.

It began with a 70metre target shoot, followed by a field shoot, and rounded off with 180 and 140 yd clout shoot. Phew!!!!

It was a beautiful sunny day, and everyone was in good spirits, a lot of laughter and banter added to the fun, and eased the pressure of what was ahead of us all.

I have to say that the raging bear in the field shoot defeated all but a few, and the fact that we came across a skull and skeleton close to the pegs on target 3 did little to instill confidence. Is this where members of Osprey end up who don't pay their fees on time!!!

Then came the clout shoot and wheather it was the heat or the tiredness by now, the flags suddenly seemed much smaller and a lot further away than at the begining of the day.

Some made the distances, others flew past and others shook their heads at being so close but not quite close enough.

After the shoot, we all headed off to the tables groaning under the weight of yummy cakes and tea, the well earned rest of the archers, laughing, chatting and comparing notes was to be seen and heard everywhere.

B.A.C did excellent at the Triple and we will all be going again next year.

New Year Fun Shoot 2010

The New Year Fun Shoot had a tricky start, first there was the weather, this was overcome by the hardy Archers of Bournemouth braving the snow and ice in the name of Fun.

Then there was a power cut during the setting up of the venue, but after calling out an official of the Sports Club (many thanks to him) we started the Fun Shoot about an hour late.

The Fun Shoot was a great success with laughing, smiling faces and barracking - everyone I spoke to was having a good time.

Many thanks to Di and Margaret for helping with the refreshments, without them there would be chaos.

Thanks to Dave and Helen for all their help with the background work to make the Fun Shoot ‘Fun’.

Not forgetting all the helpers who set up the targets and did all the little jobs needed to make the Fun Shoot a success.

But most of all thank you, the Members. Without you there would be no social event, you were all great and so were the donated raffle prizes.

I hope to see you all again with your guests for the Summer Fun Shoot in August. This, as most of you know, is held outside with more targets.

For those that missed out on the event I hope to see you at the next Fun Shoot.

Stringing Session

The weather was awful but the atmosphere was full of warmth and laughter at the stringing session held by Keith Calder, after Pip Bickerstaffs visit to the club.

As you can see, once J.R. had preened Keith ready for his debut, the session got into full swing. With our new member Greg getting to grips straight away with the equipment and making his own string for his hungarian barebow.

There was plenty of participation by everyone and no excuses now for tatty strings on bows in the future

Bickerstaffe Seminar

On Sunday 18th October (apologies for wrong day / right date initially advertised) we were treated to a seminar by Pip Bickerstaffe.

Pip has been shooting since the 60's and has made over 1500 longbows, his interest and enthusiasm for wood is phenomenal.

The first part of his talk was about the history of archers, about the myths and what probably happened!

He showed us the different parts of trees, where they grow and how the wood is selected and how to decide where it is to be cut. Also how the bowyer gets the shape to get maximum energy out of the bow

Shooting techniques were then discussed and tried, again mainly to get the best performance out of the wood. A bit of a problem when on a close shooting line as needs more space* .
We finished with a lively question and answer session, although a bit disappointing some missed out on this informative ending part. Hope the coaches were able to take some positive tips away from the day, as longbows are making a comeback and we will certainly appreciate their help.
